COLLEGE OF FINE ARTS AND COMMUNICATION SEPTEMBER ISSUE | FAL L 202 1 LETTER FROM THE DEAN DR. JOHN FLEMING Art and Design faculty presented their work in Chicago, Dallas, Miami, Los Angeles, San Antonio, Boston, Singapore, Colorado Springs, Princeton, Helsinki, and England (pp 3-4). Jennifer Datchuk was named the 2021 State of Texas 3D Visual Artist of the Year by the Texas Legislature, and photography students are interning with NASA’s Johnson Space Center (pp. 2-4). In Communication Studies, over a dozen faculty published articles or book chapters, with some also selected for Top Paper presentations at the forthcoming National Communication Association conference (pp. 6-8). Alum Cheyenne Meyer is a communication specialist with G.M. Financial and also works with athletes with disabilities (pp. 7). Michael Burns worked his 6th Olympics for NBC’s Today show. Dance hosted the summer Semilla Fest, featuring work from the African, Hispanic, and Latin American diaspora (pp 10). Alum Mark Gonzalez performed with dance companies in New Mexico and Ohio (p. 11). In Journalism and Mass Communication, Dale Blasingame and Sara Shields are co-PIs on a $190,000 Texas Sea Grant, and Kelly Kaufhold won the top research award in Community Journalism at the AEJMC national conference (pp. 12-13). Te Digital Media Innovation program celebrated its 5th anniversary, and now has alums working at places such as Gannet, Petco, GoDaddy, Accenture, and BigCommerce (p. 13). In Music, Ian Davidson, Michael Ippolito, and Dimitar Ninov presented new compositions, and Mysterium, led by Richard Hall, performed at the Classic Game Fest in Austin (pp. 14-15). At our 11th International Piano Festival, alum Martin Kesuma played a CD release concert with the title track “Detours,” written by alum Wayne Oquin (p. 17). In theatre, Sarah Maines was the Associate Lighting Designer for the (London) West End production of Jersey Boys , and the department hosted the 19th Texas State Black and Latino Playwrights Celebration including a tribute to Jose Rivera (p. 18). Alum Sidney Rushing was the inaugural August Wilson House Visiting Playwright Fellow (p. 19). Student Martin Asprey won Best Short Film in the London Shorts Film Festival (p. 19).
