Appointees are selected for their years of excellence and dedicated commitment to the arts in Texas. Texas State Artists represent the best of Texas’ rich and diverse artistic community. Tese individuals inspire others through their unique creative expression. Tis designation is our state’s highest recognition for excellence in the arts. Jennifer Ling Datchuk was a visiting artist in August at Ox-Box School of Art and Artist Residency, a summer program afliated with the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She gave a lecture on her work and conducted studio visits with students, residents, and artists. Soomin Remmler [2] has a month-long solo exhibition called What Dreams May Become at Conduit Gallery, Dallas. Opening was August 28th. Teri Evans-Palmer 's [3] book, Te Art of Teaching with Humor: Crafting Laughter , an Education title of Peter Lang Publishing, Inc., was published in July 2021. Te book ofers teachers of all levels instructional humor strategies to enhance their teaching efcacy and resilience to stressors in the work environment. Liz Rodda is presenting video work in two exhibitions this month-- at Emerson Dorsch Gallery in Miami, FL as a part of the curated exhibition, Our Constellations: Astral Embraces and Tactual Consciousness , as well as the Interstice exhibition, hosted by Te Residency Project, which will screen at various locations around Los Angeles. Tis August, Liz Rodda [4] is serving on a review panel for Blue Star Contemporary to select video work submitted to the Projection/Projektion Open Call-in collaboration with the Darmstädter Sezession. Lana Waldrep-Appl had a painting in the group exhibition Existential Evocations at Clamp Light Studios and Gallery in San Antonio through September 4. Jason Reed was appointed the Jesse H. and Mary Gibbs Jones Professor of Southwestern Studies for 2021- 2024. Funded by the Houston Endowment, the Jones Professorship in Southwestern Studies supports projects of the Center for the Study of the Southwest. Erina Duganne’s [5] essay “Tere was no record of her smile: Muriel Hasbun’s X post facto,” was published in Contact Zones: Photography, Migration, and Cultural Encounters in the United States , ed. Justin Carville and Sigrid Lien. Erina Duganne is a co-organizer of Global Photography: Temporalities and Spatial Logics. Tis upcoming virtual symposium questions how thinking creatively and critically through photography’s temporalities and spatial logics can open up new models for considering global photographic practices. Organized in two parts, over September 9 and 10, each panel consisted of two practitioners and two scholars who shared a pre-recorded ten-minute presentation followed by an hour-long moderated discussion amongst the participants, and a Q&A session with audience members. Erina was selected to participate in the Archives of American Art's Teaching with Primary Sources workshop. Each participant will attend a two- part virtual workshop, craft a low-stakes assignment to include in one of their fall 2021 courses, share their assignment on the Smithsonian Institution's Learning Lab platform, respond to a post-workshop survey about their experience teaching with primary sources, and solicit student feedback. Kathleen McShane Bolton’s Group Exhibition I Didn't Lick It will be shown in Bruton Somerset, England from July-September 2021. MiHyun Kim presented at the International Digital Storytelling Conference, Story Work for a Just Future: Exploring Diverse Experience and Methods within an International Community of Practice. It was virtually hosted by multi-institutions including the Storycenter (US), Smithsonian Institution (US), University of Maryland Baltimore County (US), Montgomery College (US), and Loughborough University (UK), and Patient Voices (UK). MiHyun presented her research project at MODE (Motion Design Education Summit). Te summit was virtually hosted by the National University of Singapore, Massey University, Kent State University, and Lesley University in Boston and Singapore. On June 18 at the Fort Garland Museum & Cultural Center, M12 Studio ( Margo Handwerker ) launched the ongoing online component of Landlines , an initiative developed by M12 Studio that promotes cultural preservation and environmental awareness through its support for projects interpreting the complexity and uniqueness of the rural San Luis Valley (CO/NM). Tis work is supported by awards from RedLine's Arts in Society, the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, and the National Endowment for the Arts. On June 29, M12 Studio ( Margo Handwerke r) opened the Black Forest Institute , an outdoor installation at the Ent Center for Performing Arts, in collaboration with the Galleries of Contemporary Art (GoCA) at the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs. Jefrey Lieber was appointed to the Texas Historical Commission’s State Board of Review. An advisory committee of eleven members with expertise in the areas of history, prehistoric and historical archeology, architectural history and architecture, the board reviews nominations to the National Register of Historic Places. Claudia Roeschmann was invited as a virtual speaker to Princeton University’s Tiger Challenge “50 Days of Summer” in July, a program that tackles complex societal issues by utilizing design thinking methodologies. Claudia was invited as a panelist at virtual DFA (Design for America) fall kick-of, with Rob Morgan from Washington University in August, to discuss the topic of “Building Relationships”. Claudia submitted and received a $25,000 grant from the US Embassy Helsinki to work on a US/Finish Art and Design Innovation Exchange program with the University of Oulu and 3DayStart-up over the fall 2021 and spring 2022 semester. In June 2021, Jessica Mallios facilitated and mentored an internship program for the Photography program with Dr. Stan McClellan, professor in Engineering. Te internship program was created through the JETS program, or "JSC Engineering & Technical Support," a multi-organizational partnership supporting NASA's College of Fine Arts and Communication | 3
