1 2 3 Brian Johnson’s print “... stacking the deck...” Jules Buck Jones exhibition titled Hand Me My Head Elvia Perrin’s artwork “Bridge” ART AND DESIGN Art , Art Education, Art Histor y, Communication Design, Photography, & Studio Art FACULTY ACCOLADES Sterling Allen had work displayed in the group exhibition, 21 taking place at Left Field Gallery in San Luis Obispo, CA. The exhibition dates were February 3 - 26. Shawn Camp recently completed a large commission for a private collector from Dallas. Roger Colombik is presenting a lecture series around the state titled “Artists in Times of War: Reflections on Haward Zinn and The Artist’s role in Civil Discourse.” It will be a discussion on artists whose works continue to make a significant contribution towards building a more empathetic, compassionate, and intelligent society including Aye Ko, Shoba, Dorothy Day, Walking with our Sisters, and Daniel Berrigan. Tommy Fitzpatrick is having a solo exhibition entitled Recognition of Sight at Texas Art House in Johnson City. Recognition of Sight will feature works spanning the last five years of Fitzpatrick’s exploration of his abstract interpretation of sculptural forms. The exhibition runs through March 12 and offers a rare opportunity to see sculptures created from found materials, which form the basis for Fitzpatrick’s paintings. A catalog will accompany this show, and will include additional works and source photography from Fitzpatrick’s most recent past shows, Cat’s Cradle and Flatland , among others. Brian Johnson will have a drawing included in the 38th Annual Paper in Particular at Columbia College Gallery, in Columbia, MO. The exhibit opened in February. Brian’s print “... stacking the deck...” [ 1 ] will be included in the Clemson National Print & Drawing Exhibition at Clemson University’s Lee Gallery, Clemson, SC. Three of Brian’s drawings will be included in the People’s Gallery show; they will remain on exhibit at the Austin City Hall for the year. He will also have eight prints included in small group show A Wandering Disposition at Art on 5th, part of PrintAustin’s month long series of events. Jules Buck Jones had an exhibit at David Shelton Gallery in Houston that ran from January 6 - February 4. The show was titled Hand Me My Head . [ 2 ] Sean Justice will present his research at the national conference in Art Education in New York City during the week of March 1 - 5. His two panels are titled, “Teaching Research: New Learning And Knowing In Practice;” and “Mentoring in Asynchronous Online Spaces: Conversations in a Shifting Paradigm.” While at the conference he will also serve as the national delegate for the Art Education Technology special interest group. Sean will also present on his work in maker education at the South by Southwest EDU conference in Austin on Wednesday, March 8. Carolyn Kilday’s book, Fatto a Mano , was shown in the International Art Exhibit at the Art Gallery Le Logge, Piazza del Comune in Assisi, Italy in December of 2016. From this exhibition, Carolyn’s book was selected to be shown in Florence at the Accademia delle Arti del Disegno in March of 2017. MiHyun Kim was invited to submit a paper titled “Design Trend: Design and Computer Technology for KEIT” (Korea Evaluation Institute of Industrial Technology). KEIT is a government-affiliated organization under the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy in South Korea. She and co-author Tore Terrasi, assistant professor of design foundation at University of Texas at Arlington, originally wrote the paper in English, and later she translated it in Korean. MiHyun was invited to have an exhibition at the 2016 KSDS (Korea Society of Design Science) International Invitation Exhibition. The exhibition was held from December 12 - 16, at Doosung Paper Gallery in Seoul, Korea. Jessica Mallios is participating in a two-person exhibition alongside artist Adam Schreiber entitled Same Sky at the University of Virginia’s Ruffin Gallery in Charlottesville, Virginia. The show opens Friday, February 24 and runs through March 31, 2017. A public artist talk was held on Wednesday, February 22. Mark Menjivar will serve as the artist-in-residence for 2017-2018 with the Texas After Violence Project based in Austin. His focus will primarily be on activating existing archives in site specific, socially engaged ways. Mark received a commission from the City of San Antonio’s Department of Art and Culture to create 5 new images for the exhibition, Our Comida, Our Cultura that opened December 8th at the Centro de Artes in downtown San Antonio. Centro de Artes is dedicated to telling the story of the Latino experience with a focus on South Texas through art, history and culture. The exhibition was open until February 17. He also led a manifesto workshop as part of Borderland Collective’s Education Workshop in partnership with Dream Week San Antonio. The printed manifesto will be distributed back to participants and disseminated widely across Texas. Mark received a Library Research Grant for research around experimental documentary projects. Funds will be used to acquire institutional rights to 14 short films made by the artist Danny Lyon. Mark Menjivar , Jason Reed and Erina Duganne spent time at the University of Arizona Art Museum in Tucson for the opening of their traveling exhibition, Northern Triangle . While there, they facilitated workshops and gave gallery talks with several college and high school classes. Hannah Park’s Fall 2016 Interactive III course’s final project, “App-Abling: Mobile Apps to Resolve Child Obesity Issues,” was sponsored by Upstream, Austin. Three students with the best design proposals were cash- awarded by the company. Hannah’s interdisciplinary research team ( Hillary Cauthen , Kaitlin Hopkins , Marian Houser , and Hannah Park) presented their project, “Mental Wellness and Successful Living Program,” at the Health Scholar Showcase sponsored by Texas State University Translational Health Research on February 10. Hannah Park’s other interdisciplinary research team (Social Media Research Lab: Stephanie Dailey , Kevin Fall , Tom Grimes , Krista Howard , Jon Lasser , Hannah Park, and Joseph Sokal ) presented their project, “Understanding Social Media’s Effect on Mental Health,” at the Health Scholar Showcase sponsored by Texas State University Translational Health Research on February 10. Hannah was appointed to become a member of the College Art Association’s Professional Practices Committee. Her term as a member began at the annual conference in February 2017 in New York. Elvia Perrin’s solo show at Wally Workman Gallery was January 21 - February 18. Elvia’s show Clean Cut exhibits at Southwest School of Art March 10 - July 16.
