COLLEGE OF FINE ARTS AND COMMUNICATION JANUARY AND FEBRUARY ISSUE | SPRING 2022 LETTER FROM THE DEAN DR. JOHN FLEMING Faculty, students, and alumni are excelling across the College of Fine Arts and Communication. Adetty Perez de Miles (p.3), Jasmine Austin (p.8), Vanessa Higgins Joyce (p.12), and John Denis (p.14) all published new books, while Sterling Allen’s art was the subject of a new book (p.2). Book chapters were published by Kevin Jenkins (p.3), Jennifer Stob (p.4), and Nico Schuler (p.15). Tammy Fife was inducted into the Texas Dance Educators Hall of Fame (p. 11), while Jason Kwak was inducted into the Steinway and Sons Teacher Hall of Fame (p.15). One of Jennifer Datchuk’s exhibits earned a Best in Texas exhibition from Glasstire (p.2), while Cheri Prough DeVol won Best Scenic Design in Cleveland (p.16). Mark Menjivar earned a grant from the Andrew Mellon Foundation to expand one of his artist-in-residence programs (p.3). Elizabeth Eger’s research on “presenteeism” was featured in multiple TV appearances and in Dame magazine (p.9), while Omari Souza presented diferent aspects of his design research in conjunction with Google, IBM, and Rwanda’s Minister of Health (p.4). Michael Burns worked his 7th Olympics in Beijing (p. 8), while Ian Davidson and Daris Hale performed in Rio de Janeiro and Mexico City (p.14). Michael Ippolito’s new song cycle premiered at the Kennedy Center Terrace Teatre (p.14), while Ana Baer’s video dance works won awards in Athens and New York City and have been selected for screenings in Australia and India (p.10). Art and Design hosted an alumni art exhibit (p.6-7), while Communication Studies hosted our 6th TEDx (p.9). Alum Jakob Rodriguez now produces the 10:00 news for Corpus Christi’s KIII-TV (p.13). Alum Forest Van Dyke joined the national tour of Te Lion King , Joey Marie Urbana is in season 5 of the FX series Snowfall , Rachel Webb performed with Kristin Chenoweth, and Michael Daleo won Best Cinematography award from the Culver City Film Festival (p.17).
