Maia Wright will be leading a workshop on human-centered design research for students in the Design Methods course at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign on February 29 and March 1. The research methods she will teach are rooted in the practices of social impact design, IDEO, the Stanford d.school, and frog. On March 1, Maia will hold individual critiques with the MFA design students at UIUC. Maia has been commissioned by the Bullock Museum of Texas State History to design a 208-page book showcasing the breadth of the museum’s historic artifacts and their stories. The book will be published in Fall 2016. The book Frederick Law Olmsted: Plans and Views of Public Parks , designed by Maia Wright and published by Johns Hopkins University Press in 2015, was awarded the annual publication prize by the Foundation for Landscape Architecture. The book has been recently featured in The New York Review of Books , the Boston Globe , and Harvard Magazine , which called it “[a] sumptuous, gorgeous volume [that showcases] the designs that defined what made many American cities great, and livable.” Student Accolades Kathleen McShane-Bolton and Matt Rebholz have work in The Southwest School of Art’s biannual exhibition Texas Draws IV , Russell Hill Rogers Galleries 1 & 2, Santikos Building, Navarro Campus, February 11-April 24, 2016. Metals major Alexander “K” Kamelhair was invited to participate in a collaborative lecture and workshop in Vienna, Austria with an international group of practicing blacksmiths. This invitation was a result of connections made during his summer trip to Europe, made possible through a SURF grant. Liz Rodda’s Expanded Media class is participating in an upcoming exhibition, Do It & Do It (Archive) , at Blue Star Contemporary in San Antonio. Each student will respond to a different artist instruction for the exhibition. Curated by Hans Ulrich Obrist, Do It began in Paris in 1993. Nearly 20 years later, Do It has been featured in at least 50 different locations worldwide. Blue Star Contemporary will be hosting the first Do It exhibition in Texas. The show opened March 3, 2016 and closes May 8, 2016. Alumni Accolades ComDes 2004 alum Sarah Dodds (and her sister Shauna Dodds King) won a Grammy at this year’s Grammy Awards for packaging design.
