COLLEGE OF FINE ARTS AND COMMUNICATION NOVEMBER AND DECEMBER ISSUE | FALL 2020 LETTER FROM THE DEAN DR. JOHN FLEMING My gratitude to faculty, staf, and students for their perseverance in successfully completing a challenging semester. In Art and Design, Erina Duganne and Gina Tarver both published books with Routledge (p.3,5), while Jef Davis’ clients included the Welch Foundation and HEB Family Trust (p.3). Adetty Pérez de Miles was elected Co-president of the National Art Education Association Women’s Caucus (p.4), and Joey Fauerso was one of only 25 artists awarded a Joan Mitchell Foundation Painters and Sculptors grant (p.3). In Communication Studies, Elizabeth Eger and Kristin Farris published articles (p.6) while Roseann Mandziuk received a Distinguished Service Award from the Southern States Communication Association (p.7). Dean’s Seminar recipients were Ann Burnette (p.7) and Kaysie Seitz Brown (p.11). Nicole Wesley curated and co-directed the COCO Dance Festival (p.11), while faculty, students, and alumni created screendances for various festivals (pp.10-11). In SJMC, Clay Craig, Jenny Buschhorn, and Amber Hinsley published research (pp.12-13), while Vanessa Higgins Joyce earned an international grant (p.12), and Gene Brenek won the Big Wig Educator of the Year award from the Austin Ad Federation (p.12). In Music, Daris Hale, Ian Davidson, and Stephen Girko recorded two new albums (p.14), while Kyle Glaser conducted the Texas State Symphonic Winds in an outdoor concert (p.15). Martin McCain did multiple virtual recordings, performances, and masterclasses (pp.15-16), while Christopher Martinez received the Texas Music Educators Association Outstanding Music Educator Award (p.17). In Teatre, Babs George, Tobie Minor, Brandon McWilliams, Bryan Poyser, and Caitlin Turnage won awards for their creative work (p.18), while numerous alumni were also nominated (p.20). Alum Forest VanDyke is one of three vocalists on the Grammy-nominated jazz album Dialogues on Race (p.21), and student Craig Nigh has a recurring role on Fear the Walking Dead (p. 19).
