Sterling Allen Backdrop & Blocker Installation View, Lawndale Art Center Shawn Camp The Absolute of the Mystics Acrylic on wood, 30x30 Lecturer, Esteban Hinojosa ART AND DESIGN Art , Art Education, Art Histor y, Communication Design, Photography, & Studio Art FACULTY ACCOLADES Sterling Allen opened his solo exhibition, Backdrop & Blocker , at Lawndale Art Center in Houston on September 22nd in both the O’Quinn and Cavner galleries alongside an essay written by Betsy Huete. [ 1 ] Allen’s work will also be included in the upcoming issue of New American Paintings, No. 132, West Issue curated by Valerie Cassel Oliver which will be available in Oct/ Nov 2017. Shawn Camp had an exhibition called Wide Open at Georgetown Art Center last month. [ 2 ] He also participated in Red Dot Art Spree at Women and Their Work. Upcoming group shows include Good Mourning Tis of Thee at Co-Lab and Build Hope Not Walls at Big Medium Gallery - both in Austin opening October 13th. Erina Duganne co-edited a special issue of the academic journal Photographies (Taylor & Francis, London). Her introduction, with co-editor Heather Diack, is “Not Just Pictures: Reassessing Critical Models for 1980s Photography,” Photographies 10, issue 3 (August 2017): 235–243, and is available online . Esteban Hinojosa received the Faculty Senate’s Part- Time Faculty Excellence in Teaching Award for the College of Fine Arts and Communication. [ 3] Molly Sherman and her collaborators Harrell Fletcher (Portland State University), Greg Pond (Sewanee), and Anna Craycroft (Yale) have been awarded a Yale-Sewanee Collaborative for Southern Appalachian Studies Grant with generous funding from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation for the development of a new inquiry-based project at Sewanee: The University of the South that investigates Highlander Folk School’s history in Appalachia and its significant influence on social engagement and participatory education. Molly has new work in the group exhibition LIFT , curated by Bridge Projects at Artpace in San Antonio. The exhibition opened on September 21st and runs through December 31st. Gina Tarver and Erina Duganne co-authored an interview with Colombian artist Juan David Laserna, published in Duganne’s special issue of Photographies titled “Advertisement Extraction: Interview with Juan David Laserna,” Photographies 10, issue 3 (August 2017): 329–345. Kellen Walker performed “A Small Ceremony” at Chinati Weekend in Marfa, Texas. The performance also served as the perfume launch for “Texas Cedar,” a scent made by Walker and performers through collaborative research and rehearsals. “A Small Ceremony” ran on October 7 at the Deadmoon Saloon, a pop-up venue that activates historic, forgotten spaces. 2 | October | College News College of Fine Arts and Communication | 3 1 2 3 OCTOBER 1 1, 2017 The Dean’s Seminar is a reception and presentation that honors faculty within the college. The seminar on October 11th, honored Kathryn Moore , Assistant Professor in the School of Art and Design. Her research spans the Medieval and Renaissance periods in Europe and the Mediterranean Region, with an emphasis on cross- cultural exchange between Christian and Islamic cultures. Her presentation was entitled “Italian Renaissance Arabesques and the European concept of ‘Islamic Art.’”
