College of Fine Arts and Communication | 7 “Rhetoric as an Anchor: Re-mooring First Amendment Freedoms in the South.” Rebekah Fox and Ann Burnette also presented a paper entitled, “Freedom of Speech in the Marketplace of Ideas: Un-An- choring the Student-as-Consumer Metaphor” to the Southern States Communication Association conference. Nikki Saldivar Hodgson hosted a resume writing workshop open to both undergraduate and graduate students. Students learned valuable tips on how to enhance their resumes and stand out in the job market and received one-on-one instruction. Nikkie was invited as the guest speaker for the Texas State University Panhellenic Recruitment Counselors meeting. Approximately 100 counselors were in attendance and the topic presented was leadership (effective communication, listening and conflict management). The training was well received by all in attendance. [3] Maureen Keeley will see the publication of her second book next month, The Good Goodbye . The book, co-authored with Dr. Ju- lie Yingling, is a continuation of Maureen’s “final conversations” research. The book centers on the positive outcomes of final con- versations, both from the advice of children and the detailed stories of adults who were changed profoundly in their attitudes and life paths. Readers will discover how others have overcome negativity to engage in the good goodbye, and how they can improve their own preparedness to have final conversations. [4] Manu Pokharel presented her innovative research titled "Ultravio- let Photo Intervention to Promote Sunsafe Behaviors among Young Adults: A Message Experiment," alongside M.A. alumni Heather Poulsen and Abigail Mellow at the 2025 Health Scholar Showcase at TXST. Their research explores the use of UV photo interventions to promote sunsafe behaviors in young adults—an important step in raising awareness and encouraging healthier habits. This research was conducted using psychophysiological measures in the depart- ment’s BioCOMM Lab. [5] STUDENT ACCOLADES M.A. student Mia LaChance (Longoria) had some of her artwork featured in the Disabled & Proud (I am different but not less) show- case centered on the experience of Texas State University’s disabled student population. The purpose of this program is to create a bet- ter sense of community within the disabled community and provide disabled students an opportunity to share their voice in whichever medium best suites their artistic needs.
